Product Description
Anodic Protection Acid Distributor With Uniform Acid Distribution And High-Alloy Construction For Sulfuric Acid Handling
Introduction
The Anodic Protection Divided-Flow Distributor, commonly referred to as the Anodic Protection Acid Distributor, is a critical component designed for the safe and efficient handling of highly concentrated sulfuric acid (typically above 96% H₂SO₄) and oleum in industrial processes. It is primarily utilized in large-scale sulfuric acid alkylation units in petroleum refineries, as well as in drying and absorption towers within sulfuric acid plants.
This device integrates two essential functions: uniform acid distribution across the tower cross-section and advanced corrosion control via an anodic protection system.
Working Principle
Divided-Flow Distribution: The distributor features a precisely engineered network of troughs, weirs, and distribution pipes. Its primary mechanical function is to receive the incoming acid flow from the inlet nozzle and distribute it evenly over the tower packing or downstream equipment. This uniform irrigation prevents channeling, optimizes gas-liquid contact, and ensures maximum mass transfer efficiency in the tower.
Anodic Protection: Sulfuric acid at high concentrations and temperatures is extremely corrosive to standard metals. The distributor is constructed from specialized stainless steel alloys (such as 304L or 316L). To combat corrosion, the equipment is connected to an anodic protection system.
  • Mechanism: A rectifier applies a controlled anodic current to the distributor, shifting its electrochemical potential into a passive state. This creates a thin, protective oxide layer on the metal surface that is insoluble in the acid.
  • Benefit: This significantly reduces the corrosion rate (often to less than 0.1 mm per year), preventing metal ion contamination of the acid and ensuring the structural integrity of the distributor over decades.
Key Design Features
  • High-Alloy Construction: Built from austenitic stainless steel specifically chosen for its compatibility with anodic protection and resistance to sulfuric acid.
  • Optimized Hydraulics: Engineered with specific weir heights, hole sizes, and trough spacing to maintain level operation and consistent flow rates, even during turndown conditions.
  • Modular Assembly: Designed for easy installation through tower manways, with internal components that can be assembled without welding inside the vessel.
  • Integrated Cathode System: Includes strategically placed cathodes (usually in the acid stream) to complete the anodic protection electrical circuit without disrupting flow patterns.
Advantages
  • Extended Service Life: Reduces maintenance and replacement costs by mitigating corrosion damage.
  • Product Purity: Prevents iron and other metallic contaminants from leaching into the acid, which is crucial for downstream processes like alkylation.
  • Process Efficiency: Ensures optimal acid distribution, maximizing the efficiency of the scrubbing or drying process.
  • Safety: Maintains mechanical integrity under harsh operating conditions, reducing the risk of leaks or structural failure.
Applications
  • Sulfuric Acid Alkylation Units (Refineries)
  • Contact Process Sulfuric Acid Plants (Drying and Absorption Towers)
  • Waste Heat Boiler Systems utilizing sulfuric acid
  • Storage tanks and transfer systems requiring high acid purity

Summary
The Anodic Protection Divided-Flow Distributor represents a synergy of mechanical engineering and electrochemical science. By combining precise fluid distribution with state-of-the-art corrosion prevention, it provides a reliable, long-lasting solution for the most demanding sulfuric acid services in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
